SMLive: What was your motivation behind being your own boss?
Dr. Betty: What prompted me to become my own boss was that I was sick and tired of other people determining my promotion opportunities and levels of success in the federal sector. I had 28 years in the federal sector. An early retirement opportunity became available and I took a leap of faith. God had opened the door for me to be a risk taker and with exercising my belief in God and my faith to become the CEO of Betty Seltzer Agency-Farmers Insurance. I recently celebrated five years of serving the community and being my own boss. The most exciting aspect is that I have been able to serve my community by providing excellent customer service and offering competitive rates to meet insurance needs. I appreciate all the relationships and networking partnerships and opportunities that have afforded me to be a successful business owner. I still have a lot more to do, to focus on accomplishing my goals, and to grow my agency.
SMLive: What do you do to keep a positive mindset when the mood of working is not so favorable?
Dr. Betty: To keep a positive mindset, I pray, meditate, recite positive affirmations, and/or read scripture verses. I also enjoy line dance and walking to alleviate stress. Being in the people business, I must be intentional about maintaining a positive attitude and mindset.
SMLive: Why do you think setting goals are important?
Dr. Betty: It is essential to set goals on a personal and professional basis, for instance to ensure that my overall health and wellness is maintained on a personal level. On a professional level of goal setting, I have learned to establish SMART (Specific, Measureable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time bound) businessgoals that are realistic to grow to the next level. It is challenging to get to the next level without setting goals. More importantly setting goals requires being strategic and realistic.
SMLive: Every person in life symbolizes something and every Legacy leaves a message...At the end, what would want your life to symbolize and your Legacy to stand for?
Dr. Betty: I definitely aspire to leave a legacy for my family and future generations. I would like for my life and legacy to symbolize faith, service and compassion toward others. I desire to be a difference maker in the lives of others by training and educating others about the importance of insurance, primarily women, families and business owners about the importance of having adequate insurance protection . My motto is CYA-Cover Your Assets!
